Gurugram, October 22, 2017: Since its inception, SpiceJet has been on
an endeavor to democratize air travel and connect the unconnected parts of the country.
In line with the same and taking a step further this Diwali, SpiceJet is again vowing
to connect the unconnected albeit this time to lend a help hand in lighting the remote
and un-electrified regions of the country. In this one-of-a-kind initiative ‘Roshan
Hoga Desh Hamara’ launched on the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the
airline has adopted the remote village of BARUAHCHUCK, in the Majuli district in Assam.
The airline aims to provide sustainable energy access through solar microgrid to the
people living here thereby improving their quality of life.
Recognized by the Guinness book of world records as the world’s largest river island,
Majli is situated in very close proximity to the mighty Brahmaputra river and hence is
frequently flooded thus making commuting extremely difficult. Consequently illuminating
BARUAHCHUCK village, poses an enormous gamut of challenges due to its location.
As part of the initiative, SpiceJet will set a ‘Solar Microgrid’ on site which will help
bring electricity to approximately 70 households, 1 school, 1 anganwadi, 2 temples,
areas besides the street lighting. A ‘Solar Microgrid’ is a small-scale power grid that
can operate independently or in conjunction with the area's main electrical grid to
provide electricity to a limited number of households. The ‘Micro Grid’ being set up
will be solely dedicated the BARUAHCHUCK.
On the occasion of the announcement of the special initiative, Mr. Ajay Singh,
Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet said that “"On occasions like
these, we remember our fellow countrymen who are not as fortunate as us. This Diwali we
wanted to try and light up the lives of those who have never had electricity. And so,
we are helping provide electricity to the village of BARUAHCHUCK in Assam. This is
SpiceJet's small contribution to improving the lives of the people of this village.”
Mr. Debojo Maharshi, CMO, SpiceJet said, “In an initiative to provide
electricity to un-electrified Indian households, SpiceJet is proud to adopt BARUAHCHUCK
village. The initiative will fuel new life choices for the people for whom even the
basic amenities of life seemed a distant dream. On the auspicious occasion of Diwali,
we pledge to contribute towards this noble cause and are certain that initiatives like
these will eventually uplift these regions.”
Indeed, this gesture will literally power the village of BARUAHCHUCK, which is otherwise
deprived of the means to ensure basic life. This environment friendly initiative aims
at multiplying the efficiency of the villagers while parallely ensuring public safety &
security and encouraging women entrepreneurs. The entire project is expected to be
executed in around 75 days.
